Big Local – what’s it all about?

Big Local is an exciting opportunity for residents in 150 areas around England to use at least £1m to make a massive and lasting positive difference to their communities. It’s about bringing together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live.

Supporting the DY10 Big Local Programme:

Local Trusted Organisation

To ensure openness and transparency, we have a Local Trusted Organisation who acts as our accountable body. Their role is to hold and account for the grant funding that we have been given. St George’s Church DCC Kidderminster is our fund holder, taking on this responsibility. They will be responsible for:

  1. Holding the funding on behalf of the DY10 Big Local Partnership
  2. Distributing Big Local funds in accordance with the DY10 Big Local Plan
  3. Ensuring that funding decisions and procedures meet the requirements of Local Trust, around transparency, accountability, and monitoring
  4. Making sure that the Partnership is kept informed of decisions relating to the funds
  5. Reporting, as required, to the Partnership and Local Trust

Human Resources and Payroll Management

Local charity Home Start Wyre Forest are responsible for our payroll and HR function, providing management support to the DY10 Partnership. Big Local DY10 HGB have worked closely with Home Start for a number of years, funding their local family groups. Home Start provide direct support to many families across the area, giving children and families a positive start in life. Their values are very similar to our own, making them a suitable organisation for us to work alongside.

These two roles were previously supported by Vestia Community Trust, an organisation that has been involved in many community led initiatives across Wyre Forest. They were a huge part of steering the first five years of our project and helping us to progress. We thank Vestia for all their help, particularly in project managing this phase of the project.

Big Local is being run by Local Trust, which is working with £200m from the Big Lottery Fund and a range of partners providing expert advice and support for residents.

The four programme outcomes for Big Local are:

  1. Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them.
  2. People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future.
  3. The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises.
  4. People will feel that their area is an even better place to live.

What’s it not about?

It’s NOT about your local authority, the government or a national organisation telling you what to do.

It’s NOT about individual groups fixing their favourite problem without talking to a wide range of different people who live and work in the community.

It’s NOT about short-term thinking – you’ve got 10 years or more to plan and deliver the best options for your area.
